Dear
Fellow Canastota Little League Parents,
Now
that the National, State and Local Elections are over; it’s time to focus on a
local election for our Canastota Little League officers and directors. I would
hope to see you there for these elections.
This will be Canastota’s 64th year of Little League and Little
League’s 76th Anniversary, as this is the largest chartered organization
in Canastota; I wanted to personally send you a note about our league and
the upcoming year from an Administrative prospective.
Canastota Little League is a sound organization, administratively,
financially and equipped to begin the 2015 season. The relationship with the
Village and the School District is sound. Over 300 kids participated in
spring, post season and fall baseball/ softball. Our local sponsorships
from local businesses continue to be strong.
So, we need a group of people, and it doesn't have to be parents, to
run the day-to-day functions of the league. Now, I’m not going to tell you
that’s its easy and that it doesn't involve some time, it does, as anything that’s worth
doing does. It is a year-round position,
not just a spring activity. All of the planning for the year starts the
meeting after elections. That meeting is held with both the existing and
new board members. All of our existing board members have agreed to help
transition new board members into their new roles.
But, with the right mix of dedicated volunteers this program is so rewarding.
As you begin the season on Opening Day in April and have Closing
Ceremonies in June and see how much the players have grown in the 9 weeks of
the season, and then root for our All-Star teams and then look to Fall to
have an opportunity for players to play in an additional developmental
program for 6 weeks.
If
you like the program, if you don’t like the program, or you have suggestions,
this is a great way to have your direct input on how the league is run.
If you have any additional questions feel free to give me a call at 440-1434

Each year we get about 1 or 2 reports of Head Lice affecting players.
And we have had a report this year and we would like to notify our parents.
This is also a reminder to check your players head whenever they share helmets and maybe hats/visors.
Head lice are parasites which infest human hair. These parasites are a social nuisance, but according to the Centers for Disease Control and most medical experts, lice cannot carry or transmit any disease or serious ailment to humans. They also do not manifest into epidemics, but can be passed between people where a few or more can become carriers. The lice cannot fly or jump, but make their way from one person to another through close human contact. The lice lay eggs (called nits) which attach to the shaft of hair strands. The nits may take between 6-10 days to hatch into actual lice. Some cases cause itchy scalps. The sharing of baseball and softball equipment has been discussed as a potential way for transmitting head lice between people. Consider this statement from the Harvard School of Public Health: “Shared helmets and headphones in schools or recreational settings may rarely and transiently harbor an occasional louse or nit; the effort necessary to effectively inspect and clean these devices, however, is not likely warranted.” And from the CDC Website " Head lice are spread most commonly by direct contact with the hair of an infested person. Spread by contact with inanimate objects and personal belongings may occur but is very uncommon. Head lice feet are specially adapted for holding onto human hair. Head lice would have difficulty attaching firmly to smooth or slippery surfaces like plastic, metal, polished synthetic leathers, and other similar materials." Brushes and combs are, however, cited by many experts as a more likely method of lice transmission because they may actually move the lice from the afflicted person. Still, however unlikely transmission of lice from one player to another sharing a helmet, it is important to the Canastota Little League that parents, coaches and players are comfortable and feel secure from such nuisances. Therefore, it is Canastota Little League policy that: Parents should check their children regularly for lice/nits. Parents must notify the team manager if their child has lice. No chemicals or sprays of any kind should be used on any equipment for any reason. If parents chose to purchase their child’s own helmet, it must be NOCSAE approved with the seal on the helmet. These personal helmets should not be shared among players on the team. Stickers are not allowed on personal helmets. Any player with lice/nits will use a separate helmet from the rest of the team, with the manager ensuring the dignity of the player throughout the condition. Players should never share hats, jackets, etc. Helmets, hats, jackets etc. should not be left on top of one another or in close proximity. All managers will discuss this lice control statement with all team parents and guardians. If you have questions or concerns regarding lice or any other safety or health issue involving Canastota Little League, please e-mail the Safety Officer or contact any team manager or official. You should also contact your child’s school nurse or your doctor for more information. Additional information can be found on the CDC Website http://www.cdc.gov/parasites/lice/head/gen_info/faqs.html

Little League Board of Directors Elections Wednesday November 6th, 7 pm Forum Room
Dear Fellow Canastota Little League Parents, This will be Canastota’s 63rd year of Little League and Little League’s 75th Anniversary, as this is a largest chartered organization in Canastota, I wanted to personally send you a note about our league and the upcoming year from an Administrative prospective.
As you may or may not have heard, many of the existing board members are not seeking to return for the 2014 Little League season. In fact, almost the entire Executive Committee has either placed their resignations effective the November elections or have expressed their desire not to return for next season.
Many of you may ask why the sudden exodus of the Board of Directors. Many of our board members children have aged out of the program and they have remained on the board. Others have their own reasons why, but I don’t think that anyone is leaving because of the overall program. I, having been a member of the board for 5 years felt it was time for new leadership, maybe new, bigger, better ideas.
What I can assure each one of you is that Canastota Little League is a sound organization, administratively, financially and equipped to begin the 2014 season. The relationship with the Village and the School District is sound. Over 300 kids participated in spring, post season and fall baseball/ softball. Our local sponsorships from local businesses continues to be strong. The improvements to the fields continue to allow our kids a safe place to play along with some of the fastest field recovery times in the area.
So, we need a group of people, and it doesn't have to be parents, to run the day-to-day functions of the league. Now, I’m not going to tell you that’s it’s easy and that it doesn't involve some time, it does, as anything that’s worth doing does. It is a year round position, not just a spring activity. Brushes and combs are, however, cited by many experts as a more likely method of lice transmission because they may actually move the lice from the afflicted person.

Rain Out/Cancellation - Hotline 315-256-0241 RAINOUT POLICY
Cancellation of Weekdays games may not be made any earlier than 4:00 pm. A decision could be made as late as 5:00 pm (or later if work is being done) for the 6:00 pm game and 6:30 pm (or later if work is being done) for the 7:30 pm game. A 6:00 pm game could be canceled and the 7:30 pm game could be played. Weekend games will be canceled on a game by game basis. Based on the weather all games could be canceled. Please be aware of what games have been canceled.
You may call the Canastota Little League Hotline at 315-256-0241 to see if games have been canceled. We will also post it as soon as possible on this Website. (But many times the people who update the website may be working on the field)
Managers will be contacted by their League Coordinator, Player Agent, Vice President or President of Canastota Little League. Once the game has stated, it is up to the Umpire to determine the playing field. For Divisions without Umpires, the League Coordinator can make the determination. Managers and/or their designee should attempt to call each player on their roster to inform them of the decision to cancel the game or event. The following will be considered when canceling games: (1) How much it has rained on the fields (2) Is there any more rain expected and if so when (3) Can we get the fields in playing condition by a game time (4) How much help will we have in getting the fields ready (5) Thunder and Lightening.
On days that it rains, anyone that is able should come to the fields as early as possible to help with work to get the fields ready to play, especially the teams that are scheduled to play.
Cold and minor wind is not nor will be a reason to cancel a game.
If coaches do not receive a phone call by 5:00, or an hour before game time, the game is assumed to be on and will only be called at home plate by the games umpire. If one team does not show up, the team that shows up will be awarded a forfeit victory.

Couple of items
First, if someone knows where the faucet handle is to turn off the rain, please let us know.
Second, Coaches Pitch and T-ball teams have been assigned, calls will be going out, If you haven't heard by Saturday April 20th let us know via the hotline or send a message through the website.
Third, Opening day is Saturday April 27, Players should be in the Queenboro/Zems parking lots about 8:30 am, Parade starts at 9 am sharp, Opening Ceremonies will start about 10 am (And it will be a beautiful day) All teams will play on the 27th except T-ball, T-Ball will start Tuesday April 30th. All players should be there including our Senior Baseball and Softball players.
Fourth, Because of the weather we are a little behind getting the recreation park ready for opening day, We are having our last major Clean Up Day on Saturday 4/20 starting about 9:30 am. Bringing rakes and gloves will be a big help. We will be there most of the day, so don't think you need to be there at 9:30, anytime would be fine and maybe give us an hour or two.
Lastly, as a reminder all helper/coaches/team parents, anyone that interacts with the players, need to Fill Out and have an approved Volunteer Application. This is a Little League and Canastota Little League policy that can not be waived or overlooked. If you need to fill one out, you can download it from the website.
Thank you for all your support and patience as we kick of another successful Canastota Little League Season
